2010 SUP Whitewater Championships

To all of you interested in the 2010 Whitewater Stand Up Paddling Championship (coming up this Memorial Day)...please check out the event's new website www.whitewatersupchampionship.com

The 2010 Whitewater Stand Up Paddling Championship will be held Memorial Day (May 31) in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. This one of a kind event will feature the world’s best river stand up paddlers displaying their paddling prowess on the snowmelt swollen Colorado River. This new and innovative competition promises to be fierce. Returning Men’s champion Dan Gavere and local C4 Waterman team paddler and owner of the Aspen Kayak Academy (www.aspenkayakacademy.com) Charlie MacArthur will be battling it out for the top spot but anything can happen and the competition promises to be fierce.  Some of Hawaii’s top stand up paddlers will be traveling to the mainland for the event. C4 Waterman (www.C4waterman.com) will be well represented at the competition with members of their SUP team heading to CO for this unique test of skill.

The event starts with a downriver race from Two Rivers Park in Glenwood Springs down to South Canyon. This fast and furious whitewater 7 mile (approx) balancing act will feature a mass start with the fastest paddler winning this segment of the championship. Next up is a timed technical sprint competition being held a spectator friendly portion of the river next to Two Rivers Park.

The championship’s culmination will be a surfing contest on the world famous wave at the Glenwood Springs Whitewater Park. Each competitor will get 3 - 1 minute rides with the surfer’s best score being counted towards their final results. The champion(s) will be determined by a point system with scoring accrued during the 3 events. After the surf contest, the SUPers would head back to the Two Rivers Park for the award ceremony and to celebrate.

Stay tuned as more detailed event information will be available on-line soon.   As this epic event’s logistics are just being finalized and there is a short lead time to the big day, you can email paultefft (at) enviroactionproductions.com  or cpmacarthur (at) comcast.net for an immediate update on the second annual Whitewater Stand Up paddling championship.

STAND UP PADDLING EVENT SCHEDULE

·FIRST ASCENT SUP SURF SPRINT Presented by C4 Waterman
Mirrored off the classic Down River Sprint, the First Ascent SUP Surf Sprint presented by C4 Waterman is a race against the clock on the waters of Gore Creek. Anyone up to the challenge will run this 3-mile stretch from East Vail to Vail Village SUP style. Competitors must stand strong because snow melt from the nearby Gore Range makes for icy waters while navigating the class II – III rapids. Mix in a handful of low bridges, drops and wave trains, and paddlers will have to battle it out in the inaugural SUP comp on Gore Creek.

RiverSUP C4 Waterman Equipment Review

Charlie MacArthur explains the theory behind the 10-6 C-Mac ATB and the inflatable C4 SUB-Vector series.

BRING ON THE SPRING RUN OFF

While driving home from work on a snowy evening I started day dreaming about training for a SUP downriver race this up coming season but the allure of SUPing my local run kept taking a hold of my mind. That thought was too powerful for me to ignore. To get familiar with what taught me the fundamentals of kayaking but only to do it this time standing up just made my heart race. My local run called Slaughterhouse will start low and boney and potentially turn into a major flush over the course of a month or so. Ha, ha, how I love spring runoff. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. Maybe I should get some padded tights to help out with this affair.

I was still relishing over a terribly exciting SUP experience I had with Charlie MacArthur and Dan Gavere last spring runoff where I swam a ton and simply got pummeled. I remember watching Dan gear up before our session where he was putting on motocross knee/shin guards with duct tape. What the?? Oh, my god that is genius, I though to myself! I was instantly envious and did not hesitate to ask if he had another pair. I knew it was a long shot but from out of the depths of his van Dan pulled out one and then another. I was so stoked that he had a pair to offer and it felt awesome strapping those things on. Last Updated ( Wednesday, 07 April 2010 15:42 ) Read more...
